Moving website to different hosting

Moving website to different hosting

If your website has been online for a while, you may want or need to move it to another hosting provider . This may have various reasons, because you are dissatisfied with the service of your hosting provider or, for example, because you want to improve the speed of your website. An exciting job, because you don’t want your website to be offline for long. Fortunately, moving your website is less difficult than you might think. In this blog we therefore share 3 ways in which you can move your website to other hosting. In this article we also use WordPress as an example because most websites have been and are being developed with WordPress.

Why move WordPress to other hosting?

There are several reasons to move your WordPress website to other hosting, such as:

  1. Your website is slow
    If your site is slow, people find it annoying. Google also doesn’t like slow websites. The speed of your website can influence how well your website is found in the search engine.
  2. Poor customer service
    If you are not very technical, good help is important. If you have questions, you want answers quickly. If customer service is poor or slow to respond, this is a reason for many people to move a website to another hosting provider.
  3. Higher costs upon renewal
    Sometimes hosting companies give a discount for the first year, but after that the costs become much higher. To prevent this, you can choose to switch to another hosting provider. Doing this every time can be time consuming but it is an option you can consider if you want to save money.

Free relocation by hosting provider

Would you prefer to have as little work and hassle as possible when moving your website? Some hosting providers, such as Cloud86 , mijn.host and Junda , offer a free moving service in many cases. The hosting provider will then take care of moving your website, database(s), email addresses, email and your domain name . We say “in many cases” because sometimes the cheapest web hosting package may not offer a moving service.

When the website has been moved, the hosting provider checks whether everything is working properly. Finally, they transfer the domain name. Until then, your website and email will remain active with your old host, so that downtime is kept to a minimum. All DNS settings of your domain name remain active at that time, including your website.

Using a moving service to move your WordPress website often saves work, time and stress. The disadvantage is that you have less control over the move. Moreover, the service is not always free. Would you rather get started yourself? Then you can use a WordPress plug-in or manually move your WordPress website yourself.

Hosting providers with free moving service

Moving a website with WordPress website moving plugin

If your current hosting provider does not offer a moving service or you prefer to have control over your move, you can use a plugin. There are several plugins available for this purpose. Our tip: All-in-One WP Migration (alternative Duplicator – WordPress Migration & Backup Plugin ). This plugin is free, easy to use and lightweight. Follow the steps below to move your website using All-in-One WP Migration:

Step 1: Install plugin

Go to the WordPress dashboard of your website and click on Plugins → Add New. Find the All-in-One WP Migration plugin and install and activate the plugin.

Step 2: Export existing website

Go to All-In-One WP Migration and click Export. Select ‘Export To’ and download your website to your computer or to a cloud platform (for example Google Drive).

Step 3: Import website

Log in to your new web host and make a fresh WordPress installation. Log in to your dashboard, install the All-in-One WP Migration plugin (see step 1) and choose Import → Import From. Now import the file you downloaded in step 2.

Just wait a moment and…there’s your website again! Do you want to use the same domain name as before? Then check with your new web host how you can best approach this.

Manually move your WordPress website to another hosting

Although moving your WordPress website is easier with a moving service or plugin, you can also choose to move the website manually. Use the step-by-step plan below:

Step 1: Take out a new hosting package

Choose a new hosting provider and take out a hosting package.

Step 2: Backup all files

Back up all website files. Use an FTP client (such as FileZilla) to log in to your FTP server. Search for the root directory of your WordPress website, select all files there and copy them to your computer.

Step 3: Export database

Access to your website’s database varies per hosting provider. Make sure you select the desired databases and click ‘Export’.

Step 4: Create new database

Go back to your new hosting provider and create a database there: Go to the section about MySQL databases, but create a new database, create a database user with full access and create a secure password.

Step 5: Edit the Config.php file

Find a file called wp-config.php in the root of your WordPress installation on the FTP (FileZilla). Make a copy of this file and save it. Open the original file with a text editor or coding program and navigate to the next section:

define(‘DB_NAME’, ‘database_name_here’);

/** MySQL database username */

define(‘DB_USER’, ‘username_here’);

/** MySQL database password */

define(‘DB_password’, ‘password_here’);

/** MySQL hostname */

define(‘DB_HOST’, ‘localhost’);

Replace “database_name_here, username_here” and “password_here” with the database name, username and password you created in step 4.

Note: Save the MySQL server information instead of ‘localhost’. With some hosting providers it remains “localhost” so check this carefully.

Save the file once you have finished making all the changes and are sure everything is correct.

Step 6: Upload files to new hosting provider

Upload your website files (see step 2) to the server of your new hosting provider. Use your FTP client to connect to the new server (FileZilla for example).

Your domain name is still connected to your old web hosting. Therefore, use the IP address of your new server. If you are unable to resolve this issue, you can ask your new hosting provider to set this up.

Success? Then upload the files, including the modified config.php file, to the new root directory.

Step 7: Import database

Log in to the database administration tool of your new server and import the database from your website.

A few useful tips for moving your WordPress website

Have you decided to move your website yourself via one of the two methods mentioned above? Then there are some important points you should take into account.

When moving your website, it is important to ensure that your website has as little downtime as possible and that your website becomes inaccessible during the move. In most cases, a move is completed within a few hours, but this also depends on the size of your website or webshop. If you are carrying out the move yourself, it is advisable to do this late in the evening or at night, so that you have some extra time in case something goes wrong and the chance of missing visitors during any downtime is minimal.

Moving email

If you move your website, you also want to take your email with you. Therefore, check carefully whether this is possible when you switch hosting providers. Not all hosting providers also take over all e-mail boxes because this can be a time-consuming job with many large mailboxes.

Transfer domain name

If you move your website, you can choose to move your domain name immediately. It’s nice if both are hosted by one hosting provider.

To transfer your domain name, you need a transfer code. Request the transfer code from your current hosting provider and give it to your new hosting provider so that they can transfer the domain name.  PLEASE NOTE, a moving token is valid for x number of days. So don’t wait too long before moving.

Moving a WordPress website: What is the best way?

Which method of moving is “best” is of course a personal choice. If your hosting provider offers a free moving service, it would actually be a shame not to take advantage of it. It’s fast, takes little to no effort, and is done by experts who know what they’re doing. Are you going to get started yourself? Then we recommend using the All-in-One Migration WP plugin. This is a lot faster and easier than moving manually.
